Figure drawing and painting

Full day workshop with a high school art class

Two hours... Working from a live model there will be lessons and practice covering three basic figure drawing exercises. We will draw from the model using gesture drawing, contour drawing and bulking up. This will develop an appreciation of how to draw the human figure. We will each go through about 25 sheets of large newsprint, as big as possible. We'll need lots of that nice compressed charcoal, excellent for drawing big, but very messy. Alternatively conté or soft pencil.
Three hours... Canvases 16" X 20" or bigger are a good size to work with. Acrylic paint, palettes and water cups, rags and brushes -- w/c brushes, each with a set of numbers 4, 6 and 10 and maybe a 3 for fine details would be great. Canvases are gessoed and then painted in an off white wash. Using oranges, pinks, reds or yellows to convey the human form, the students select to take further from their charcoal and conté gestural studies of the live model.
