In my own painting practice I have been primarily engaged with exploring pattern and especially the contrast between mechanically reproduced pattern (e.g. wallpaper) and organic forms such as those found in nature or created by the artist’s hand. For 'Metamorphosis’, an exhibition at The Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, I wallpapered the walls of the gallery at the start of the show and then worked into that pattern for the duration of the week to create an evolving exhibition, to highlight the contrast between the live, organic nature of the painting process versus the mechanically produced pattern.
Workshops and Activities
I am very flexible and happy to work with teachers to develop an art workshop specifically designed to meet the curriculum needs of their class and to incorporate themes that are being explored. The more we all engage with technology, the greater the need and (and the pleasure) for students to explore ways to work with materials and their hands, to examine and discover creative problem solving approaches. My priority is that the process is what is valuable (more than the end results) as it is what we discover and learn along the way that so often surprises us. I have run workshops for all age groups ranging from Kindergarten up to grade 12 IB art students; Acrylic Painting, mandala drawing and vision board projects are a few of the projects I have done. I have a six week project with grade six students in which they design their own model home and then translate those drawings into 3D models constructed with foam board. We explore some different styles of Architecture e.g. Earth ships. I am currently excited by the opportunity to bring my own artwork practice into the classroom, exploring the nature of pattern and the contrast between the organic and the mechanically reproduced image (via the use of wallpaper). This workshop allows students to both observe aspects of my own creative process in action and also gives them the opportunity to engage with materials in new ways. Please contact me to discuss how this may benefit your class.
