Workshops and Activities
As a PAINTS Artist there are a few things I would like to share with Nova Scotian students. One that might be especially valuable and interesting is answering the big questions of "what do artists do all day?" and "how do artists make money?" At 24, I am growing and managing my own art practice, and managing projects internationally for renowned Canadian artist, Brendan Fernandes. This day-job (so to speak) gives me a lot of valuable insight into the Canadian and New York art worlds, and has shared with me many examples of how you can work towards a career as an artist even from small-town Nova Scotia. Having been in high school not so long ago, I remember the pressures of "choosing a life path" and the lack of little information I had in the area that interested me most (visual art). It wasn't until after my university experience and through a great deal of mentorship, that I started to get a fairer picture of what life as an artist can actually look like. I'd like to share a little bit of that insight and some personal examples with students, through: - sharing my own projects and how I made them happen; - sharing the work that I do for Brendan and what his career looks like; - sharing the tools and strategies contemporary artists use to develop their careers; - and by connecting some of the dots between this, and what students are already learning in your classroom.
