Workshops and Activities
Possible workshops and areas of interest: My artwork is usually watercolour or oil, but I am always experimenting with new ideas, mediums and techniques. I do some commission work, usually portraits. In teaching, I keep to art, rather than crafts and I try to find a good balance between valuable learning and having fun. I believe I have developed a good sense of what art activities children seem to like, an understanding of attention spans in the younger crowd, and I am aware of the amount of prep work involved. For the 8-12 age groups, I do lessons with shading, face drawing, still life , composition, perspective, etc. For all ages, I do projects in printmaking, collage, sculpture, papermaking, murals, etc.; using many materials, including tempera, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, pencils, markers, crayons, clay and wire. Some popular lessons are an ‘under the sea’ mural, bird collages, landscape triptychs, reverse glass painting and wax resist batik painting. For cultural lessons, I do lessons with African symbol art and combine it with pattern making; Mi’kmaq petroglyphs, clay totem poles, southwest Indian pots, Chinese brush painting and Japanese gyotaku fish printing. I introduce students to the work of famous artists, but without copying. I would be pleased to plan and create art projects, large or small, and can email examples of past student work.
