I am a Canadian born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and raised in the Ottawa Valley. For the past 36 years I have lived in Nova Scotia . I studied commercial art and was a graphic designer before returning to my first love, drawing and painting in 1996. I benefited from art school, but am entirely self-directed in all my real education. I am a visual artist, award winning children’s picture book illustrator, and author.
Workshops and Activities
There are many ways to tell stories, and convey messages and feelings. This is what people do, communicate, though we tend to think it’s done mostly with words. Visual communication is perhaps one of the most powerful ways to express ourselves personally, and reach others meaningfully. I want children to find that the creative spirit inside them is unique, valuable and exciting, and can be readily accessed and developed with ease. I am quite comfortable working with teachers and students in wide range of areas: -Creative visual communications -Drawing and sketching; really seeing -Picture painting; people, land- sea- and cityscapes -Illustration; telling stories in words and pictures -Plants, animals; nature conservancy -Culture; the arts -History; Nova Scotia, Black, First Nations A benefit of being a visual artist is that I get to work in areas of personal interest, follow my curiosity and grow with new challenges. In my practice I paint scenes outdoors directly from nature, paint contemporary genre paintings, and subjects from Canada’s past. I illustrate picture books, paint portraits and the human figure from life, and accept commissions.
