Workshops and Activities
Clay Sculpting/Plaster Casting/Painting is always a favorite with grade 3s and up. In this workshop, the students enjoy the sensorial experience of learning to work with natural clay. They learn techniques of wetting, adding, subtracting, and forming. After their pieces have dried over one or two nights they can enjoy another sensory process of casting. Casting with plaster strips is tactile and produces terrific results for finely detailed sculpture. After these layers dry, the clay piece turns into a hard white sculpture and is now primed for painting. The last step becomes a lesson on color theory and students develop their own color swatches which they will then use on their sculpture. Surreal Stories is a workshop for Gr. 10-12. In this workshop I guide students to consider how their personal stories/experiences can have a positive social impact. I show them my personal narrative of using the metaphor of the sperm whale in my drawings and paintings. I also share the unique features and practices of this mythologized creature and draw its connection to racism and racialization as well as the practice of empathy. I invite students to consider their personal stories and how they would symbolically represent themselves in surreal drawings/paintings to create a parallel dialogue in their art.
