Merle Harley is an interdisciplinary artist currently working and living in Halifax. She graduated from NSCAD University in Fine Arts and has a previous background in community theatre. Her work follows interior and exterior narratives by creating spaces and objects that act as artifacts for the audience to interpret and make connections forming a personal meaning. Often working in collaboration with other artists she creates clothing, objects and installations that can be used in dance and theatre performances. Harley was nominated twice as a printmaker for the Starfish Awards and is the current artist-in-residence at the Centre for Art Tapes.
Workshops and Activities
I would be able to run a workshop in a variety of different mediums for many different skill levels. My format for running a workshop usually is to introduce myself, start with a get to know you name game, maybe two games depending on the age level and energy of the participants. Then introduce the activity we will be working on then start with drawing and brainstorming ideas. Then bring out materials, do a short demonstration of how to use the materials. Some workshops I would be interested in running: - Screen printing - on fabric, clothing or paper. This I find is very popular with youth from 12 -18. - Knitting, weaving, sewing. Creating textiles and clothing. - Mask making. Creating masks using cardboard, found materials, paper mache is very creative and allows for a parade or short performance at the end of workshop. - Building miniatures worlds. This is very fun and personable for young participants, allows them to create something manageable for small hands and the theme of their personal worlds allows them to share their views in an interesting and open way. - Cardboard arcade games. Building simple arcade games that the participants can play such as wheel of fortune, toss games, fuse ball etc. - Toy Theatres. Creating a small theatre with drawn or collaged sets or characters. This allows children to perform for each other and tell stories. After the participants finish creating we would share our creations and have some kind of celebration.
