Workshops and Activities
As a PAINTS artist, I am primarily interested doing textile based projects with children. For younger classes, I could teach wet felting, simple rug hooking, weaving, and knitting. Wet felting is a fun activity for young children of varying skill levels. This technique would lend itself well to creating landscapes. It also creates an opportunity for children to learn more about where wool comes from and how it is processed. Simple weaving, rug hooking, and knitting are more quiet, introspective crafts. They are wonderful for calming and grounding children. I think rug hooking could be a wonderful medium for the children to create self-portraits. For this craft, you can reuse old fabrics to create your work. Rug hooking could be a part of a lesson about sustainability. For older children, I could teach the above techniques, as well as needle felting. Most children are fascinated by needle felting, and the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful colours and textures of fleece, and the seemingly endless possibilities of things to create. I minored in art history. I would love to create a PAINTS project that involves studying the life and work of a famous artist. I am particularly interested in women artists. At the Wolfville farmer's market, I developed art projects on the themes of farming, gardening, ecology, and local foods. I would be interested in teaching these types of projects in a classroom as well. I love teaching art to children and would be thrilled to work with your class.
