West Pennant
Art has been a constant throughout my life (photography, graphic design, drawing, and painting) but it was at NSCAD where I first picked up a paintbrush that I found my passion. Since then, painting has been my primary focus although drawing also holds a significant place in my practice. Several paintings from the "Empty Bowls, Sacred Vessels" series are in the collection of the Nova Scotia Art Bank and charcoal drawings from "Holocaust and Memory" toured to France. I have also been recipient of several Canada Council and NS grants for artists.
Workshops and Activities
I like to work with the little ones from Primary to Grade 6 doing small, fun projects either curriculum-related or art-for-art's sake. I usually bring in some of my work so they can see paintings up close and personal and touch and smell them. I also want to demystify the life of the artist. When I was young I didn't know anyone who was an artist. Consequently I didn't realize that it was an option for me. I thought artists were special people (they are!) and I didn't see myself in that category. I want all children with ability and interest in the art world to know that they can do it. And, for all children (and adults) there can be great pleasure in creating something with one's own hands. I want the children to be excited and to experience the joy of personal expression. I can work with any medium from paint to pencil to construction of birds and nests from scrap, or collage from found objects. I am open to suggestions as well.
