With a fine artist’s sense of colour, a problem-solver’s sense of design, and a tree-hugger’s commitment to sustainability, Linnet offers soft, colourful, innovative products for kids, simple yet ingenious patterns for makers, and patient, joyful, empowering classes for those who want to develop their own sewing and handwork practice. Linnet comes from a long line of textile artists and handworkers, and though she flirted with musical theatre, and detoured into environmental studies, she has arrived at a way to marry all her loves into one. Linnet Bird Designs is for those who look for a thoughtful approach to making.
Workshops and Activities
I am happy to collaborate on any textiles based project. I will do projects that are purely art based or will work with teachers to adapt the textile projects to suit specific areas of classroom study. I truly enjoy the problem solving aspect of creating tailored projects to address particular learning needs. Some project ideas we could explore include (but are not limited to): making a class quilt (community art/collaborative making) weaving (perhaps woven timelines where the proportions of colours used relate to specific events/milestones or something similar) ice dying, sun printing or fabric stamping (could link into a nature study) stitching with recycled materials (trying to be more environmentally aware) embroidered hoop art or stitched messages (exploring craftivism) Creating journals with fabric covers to house an upcoming writing project or simply any number of hand sewing projects aimed at having fun and learning a new skill. I have also done a series of workshops for elementary aged children titled "stitch me a story" in which we create a project based on a picture book or story shared with the children, and would be happy to adapt this to a school setting. Most of my classroom projects would be designed to be completed in one 3hr session or over a maximum of 3 separate classroom visits not to exceed 3 hours each.
