Jessica Winton

Halifax
An advocate for art in the public realm, Winton creates performative/sculptural installations to provoke civic engagement on socio-political issues. Her experience as a prop builder in the Film and Television industry has influenced her mixed- media approach in material usage. Recently attaining an MFA from NSCAD University, she continues to investigate the role of the citizen artist in the public spheres we occupy and follows Joseph Beuys’ theory of the importance of sculpture’s relationship to the social. Her studio is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia though her projects often carry her off into the woods and open fields.
Workshops and Activities
My strengths as an artist appear in projects that begin with undefined material/process boundaries, but clarity of purpose. As a facilitator, finding the way into a project with students and teachers interests me greatly. I value context responsiveness, and am flexible in my material and process approaches. These inclinations have led to my skill development in mixed media outdoor sculptures, interior wall panels (individually molded and cast), fantastical exercise machines, humorous public sculptural amendments as well as social art projects involving parades. I would like to be involved in projects that grow a play tunnel from willow branches, or a mural of the international space station, or create mobiles - maybe a hundred of them? Developed and presented student projects have included: Read my lips - gr.8+ students - using dental alginate to cast the mouth shapes of each student, casting a final plaster positive and then adding text speech bubbles to "speak" their minds. Home: inside and out - gr.3/4+ students - using mixed media craft materials, students created animatable Hermit crabs, whose removable outer shells referenced outdoors, when removed revealed an inner world. A short stop-motion film was created, using painted backdrop environments, to show the parade of crabs to families at the annual open-house. Small worlds - gr. 3- 8 students - using layers of various growing mediums, tiny mythical environments are created with sculptural elements inside a verdant terrarium.
