I have always had a strong desire to share my stories. I share my life experiences through art, poetry, movement, social media, and storytelling. I want to show that life is not one direct path; but many, and is constantly changing and adapting with new knowledge and new experiences. I want to teach all people- children, youth, adults and seniors. I want to teach students that they can use art as a process to reflect and build ideas, innovate change, and take responsibility within their community, environment and themselves- finding their place in the world through mistakes, risk-taking and observation.
Workshops and Activities
As an artist in the PAINTS program I would like to incorporate land and place based learning and get the students outside to explore their local surroundings. Differentiating the lesson is important, therefore I would offer a few different mediums for the students to choose to work with. The options would be to use mixed media such as watercolour, acrylic paint, collage, photography/photo transfers, textiles, drawing, or performance. I would ask for the students to choose two options to combine. We would then go outside and sketch, observe, or collect bits of our surroundings. Gathering our sources inside, the students will decide how they want to incorporate their findings into a final piece. This could be a photo transfer of an image onto an object they found outside, it could be taking a sketch and re-creating it via collage, or it could be painting a collection of small sketches. The project focuses on the student's autonomy and self motivation within the time frame that the students will decide through a democratic decision, together. At the end, the students will experience an art critique where they will talk about their work and give input on their peers work.
