Jennifer Houghtaling

Pugwash
Jennifer Houghtaling learned the art of craft at the new Brunswick Craft College in Fredericton, quickly realizing it was clay that spoke to her, she set up a studio in Vancouver and then relocated to Pugwash N.S. It has been 10 years of experience that has led her to a full time career of production pottery and sculptural art. She teaches through the winters at nearby schools and in the studio, and spends the summers at the Pugwash Market selling pots. Her inspiration comes from nature, often her artwork depicts messages of important issues in our world.
Workshops and Activities
As a full time potter and member of a local farmers market, I often try to encourage others to express their creativity through art and craft and put it out there for the world to see. I know this can be very challenging, but living outside the box is something I have found strengthens the character and helps with confidence, something I believe children really need to experience as much as possible. I would like to provide an opportunity for classrooms to experience working with clay through a variety of techniques. The main focus would be the wheel, "throwing" a pot demands focus and attention (also traits that enhance the human experience). Understanding the process from a ball of clay to a finished piece gives the students awareness of the work it takes to make something yourself. Other techniques offered are hand building, sculpture and tile carving approaches. Any of these can become part of the workshop offered depending on timing and areas of interest of the students. In my own studio, I like to allow for some "free form" to take place, this can have very interesting outcomes when offered in a classroom as it allows the students to open up to their creativity and share something about themselves. All necessary supplies are provided in any of the workshops. Please contact me directly for further details or to choose a workshop jenniferhoughtaling@gmail.com
