I paint primarily in oils and water colour and am currently taking inspiration from overgrown gardens, vegetables and yoga poses. I like testing the limits of what is possible and seldom produce a traditional image. Because I am also a writer I'm always experimenting with ways to introduce words and story into my visuals and I often incorporate several mediums and techniques such as wire, clay, beads and wood into one piece. I have painted several murals around the city and have also illustrated several books, both of my own and for other writers.
Workshops and Activities
I encourage most kinds of art making, whether it be connected to a specific focus, such as a puppet play or a book, or whether it is simply to help with the exploration of art media and their potential. I've worked projects as simple as allowing an elementary class to paint still life just for the simple joy of painting to the other extreme which was a full stage rod puppet play incorporating most of the French vocabulary for Grade Four where the students wrote their own music, constructed props, choreographed dance routines, painted sets and designed programs, as well as making life sized puppets. I like to work with teachers so that each project fits their needs. Because I have extensive classroom experience I have a good idea of what works and what can be accomplished within the allotted time. I strive to give the students a challenge as well as a learning experience without being unrealistic in my expectations. I hold the personal satisfaction of each student to be most important in any art making project. For several years I conducted workshops at the NSTALL conference for teachers which enabled them to familiarize themselves with various art making processes. This also helped me to understand more fully what results teachers are hoping for. Also, because I work in several different media in my own practice I'm very flexible.
