I have been creating art since childhood when I started drawing from Ed Emberly's drawing books. After taking art lessons all the way through high school, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I went on to receive a Master in Fine Arts degree in children’s book illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Since then, I have steadily pursued a career as both a fine artist, illustrator, and art educator to children from kindergarten all the way up until high school.
Workshops and Activities
I would like to develop enriching art programs that would give students a deeper understanding of artistic methods, philosophies, and processes. The programs I would run would correlate with existing art programs but would add a deeper layer of exploration not found in their day to day art schooling. I would also like to emphasis the importance of art in the world around us and promote art making as a essential part of our society. For example, In the past I have taught a comic book making course to students in fifth and sixth grades. This three week course explored the history, philosophy, and process of comic books from first draft to final cover. Students explored the rich history of comics from the onset of the printing press to the digital age. They discovered the fascinating process of comic book creation from idea development, script creation, character design, and comic book layout. Finally, they learned the value of art mediums such as comic books and how they play a role in our society.
