Brian has been leading creative workshops in schools, institutions and his local community for ten years. His rapport with youth of all ages is infamous. His puppet shows and mask-making workshops often involve fun filled sessions with community and youth-at-risk. He worked with Bread&Puppet Theatre (Vermont USA) in 2012 and 2013 under master puppeteer Peter Schumann, building and performing in weekly shows and parades. He has done workshops and installations for White Rabbit Arts Festival, Nocturne, and has built puppets and masks for a school musicals(Little Shop of Horrors), HRM family day events, community street parties, plays, pageants and more.
Workshops and Activities
I typically design activities based on curriculum, physical space available and duration of workshop. I enjoy working and being outside for workshops when possible, and using readily available material from nature or the curbside. CARDBOARD WORLD: I have a variety of activities involving hands on cardboard creation that are very simple to execute and easily engage large groups. Some common choices are cardboard crowns for each child, little house worlds, props and more. PUPPETS BIG AND SMALL: My my practice often involves large scale collective creations resulting in some form of fabric or cardboard puppet. This collaborative process can be a really great way for a group to work together on something and have the experience of ‘moving’ together. MASKS: I have used Papier Mâché extensively to do mask making. This is a great activity where kids can get their hands dirty with my homemade corn starch based glue. The masks are a great take home and can roll easily into further activities such as paint/colour design, photography, fashion and eventually performance. ***For me a huge part of any workshop is creating an environment for kids to be creating. This may mean consider details such as background music, icebreaker activities, and multiple ‘stations’ for kids to be working.
