Nancy Cape Breton Artist teaching pottery and art from her Coxheath studio for over 15 years. Her strengths include hand building in clay; making self portrait tiles, creating masks, pinch pot creatures. She has loads of experience taking her studio to your class and firing the student's work. Nancy also loves working in paper, especially handmade papers as they "glow with colour! I also enjoy making abstract collages referencing the supernatural high that is Cape Breton Island." She works in mixed media calling this work Ink Blots of the soul, see her piece, The Nest!
Workshops and Activities
Collaging the Works of Emily Carr from the teaching website of the Vancouver Art Gallery we will explore the works of Emily Carr with a visit to the online gallery and discuss her work. From here Nancy will introduce collage and her work from her digital portfolio discussing her process and materials. Nancy will create an abstract landscape collage using handmade papers. Finally, the students will create their own abstract collage. Self Portraits in Clay; the student will be taught to create a pottery tile using simple materials (like baking a pie) and provided clay. Once the tile is created we will set it aside to firm up (leather hard carving stage). The students will then create a self portrait pencil drawing matching the size of the tile. Next we will use underglaze (which is like acrylic paint) and apply this to our hardened clay tile. Once the underglaze sets up the students will place their drawings on top and trace their self portraits to create a simple line drawing.
