Annie Onyi Cheung
I make performances, videos, and multimedia art objects and installations. I was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto and have studied at the University of Toronto (HBA) and NSCAD University (MFA). I practice and teach in Halifax where I've lived since 2012. I'm currently serving as Board Chairperson for Centre for Art Tapes.
Workshops and Activities
My workshops incorporate elements collaborative play, using language and our bodies as the primary media. I've found that collaboration creates an active space that encourages experimentation and embraces the unknown. I like to devise game-like creative activities that offer a flexible and safe structure for all participants (for example: Chinese Traditional Knot-tying together; Collaborative map drawing; Multi- or Bi-lingual 'broken telephone'-type games; Playing with everyday cultural objects as vernacular language; etc.).
