Amy Ordoveza paints small, precise still-lifes in gouache, gradually building up the paint in translucent layers to achieve rich colors and refined edges. Through her paintings, she has explored the significance that can become attached to ordinary objects such as vitamins, seashells, and plant life through associations and metaphors. Ms. Ordoveza studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the New York Academy of Art, and art education at George Mason University. She has exhibited her paintings and drawings internationally, and taught art for Fairfax County Public Schools and Arlington Adult Education. She lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Workshops and Activities
Proposed workshop for secondary students: Art-making challenge: Create a paper-sculpture and drawing that evoke a place that has been important to you. Session 1: We will view and discuss examples of contemporary artists who create artworks based on models and dioramas that they create (ex: Amy Bennett, Paloma Munoz and Walter Martin) I will also show one of my own paintings or drawings along with process photos and the paper sculpture that I worked from. Students sketch ideas and practice a variety of paper-sculpture techniques. Session 2: Students create their paper-sculptures using the folding, cutting, and gluing techniques learned in the previous session. Session 3: Students create observational drawings based on their sculptures followed by a gallery-walk and positive, brief, critique. Other secondary workshop ideas: Identity Still-lifes, Still-life Drawing: Focus on Fabric. Painting: light and shadow, Painting with an Under-painting, Colour temperature, Colour mixing, Mixing Flesh-tones for Portrait Painting. Elementary workshop ideas: Painted homes inspired by Maud Lewis, 3D-Museum Design drawing and paper-sculpture workshop, My Dream Pet painting workshop, Collaborative Collage workshop. I am happy to work with teachers to design a custom workshop that builds on skills that students have been learning in class or that creates interdisciplinary connections to other subjects.
