With an eye for the odd, Amber Solberg is an illustrator, artist, crafts-person and instructor. Hailing from Alberta, she headed east to the ocean and now lives and works in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since receiving a Visual Arts Diploma from Red Deer College and an Interdispiclinary BFA from NSCAD University, she's found that science, storytelling, watercolours and humour are her jam (although not what she'd want on toast). Her work spans from the technical to the expressive, all with an underlying creativity. The classes she teaches give voice to her various interests: from monsters to atmosphere, and more. www.ambersolberg.com
Workshops and Activities
I make workshops in what interests me. Personally, my interests are in natural sciences (weather, geography, plants and animals, evolution), imaginative culture (comics, fiction, story-based video games), and humour (in rhyming, jokes, illustrative circumstances). I've had training in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and book-making. Working in children's art camps has given me insight into other projects as well (sewing puppets, bubble dyeing, paper mabling, etc. ). In my own practice of teaching art classes, I think of the project, lay it out step-by-step how to accomplish this, and usually keep one or two tricks up my sleeve of experimentation to try (eg. salt and watercolour, glitter in printmaking). Usually one project will involve a few different art techniques. It's rarely just a drawing. For example: - I made a project that use collage, drawing techniques, and clay sculpture to imagine monster fossils. -in a jungle-themed workshop, we looked at types of trees and leaves to create free-standing treehouses -in an “Around the World” class, we used patterning, colour theory and drawing to make free-standing individualized Big Bens with moving clock hands. Generally, if given a subject, I can build a project around it. If you have questions, or would like to see some examples of past workshops, you could view my website (www.ambersolberg.com) or email me for photos.
